Just Some Friendly Advice... On Holidays

In case the buckets of rain and... some sort of containers of wind had you fooled, it is indeed Summer! I spent last week in and around Dingle, Kerry, with my family on one of those family holiday thingies. It was great! We saw some cool old stuff like the Gallarus and some Beehive Huts, and the beaches were beautiful. The greatest sight ever was seeing the sunset while on top of Mt Eagle. Coolest. Sunset. Ever!

But the only complaint I had was in the evening entertainment section of our holiday. I love my family and all that, but there's only so many games of snap a guy can take!

So here's my list of must haves when I go on holiday with family:

  • Sketch pad/journal and a good assortment of pens and pencils. These are ideal when on holiday because there's nothing worse than getting inspiration for a doodle and not have anything to doodle with!
  • A camera to take constant photos of the random odd sights that you are sure to witness. I have a great photo of these American tourists taking photos of a sign for Guinness at the side of a pub. It's priceless!
  • Bring a book. For the love of God, bring a good one! I usually bring one I've read before. I brought The Hobbit for this holiday. And small books are best. You don't want to lugg around a crap, heavy book for a week do you?
  • Bring a board game. A cheap chess set is always a good idea.
  • Bring a football. If by chance you pick a time when it isn't raining to go on holiday, spend as much time in the sun as possible!
  • Bring an Irish to English Dictionary. Spending time in the Gaeltacht without speaking some Irish is a wasted oppertunity. I may not be fluent in it but I like showing off the bits that I know :P
  • Be a Tourist!! Go to all the cheesey touristy places made for Americans and pretend to be one. Wear sandals with white socks and show off your farmer's tan. Wear hawaiian shirts in the pouring rain while eating an ice cream. Take photos of yourself standing awkwardly in front of statues or an Irish pub. Above all else, have fun!
