From Scaring Old Ladies to Feminism in Comics

I'm not entirely sure what I want to do with this blog, I'll be honest about that. I never think I can tell a story with enought fervour to get anyone else as passionate as I am about it. I just end up rambling alot and waving my hands about trying to get my point across.

One of these stories that I would like to share with everyone, and one that I actually started talking frantically about with this old lady on the bus today (yes, I actually managed to freak out an old lady! I'm sure she got off on an early stop too just to avoid me, I came across as that weird) is Feminism!!

It's funny the reaction you get from people when you say you're a Feminist... I know that alot of people have the idea of a Feminist being a large scary lesbian with hairy legs, a t-shirt saying "I Hate Men!!", armed with a burning bra in one hand and the other with a permanently raised middle finger to any men foolish enough to get too close to her. Surprisingly, this kind of Feminist just doesn't exist. They were around for a bit in the 70's, but so were tartan flares.

I'm a guy, I'm 21 years old and I am a Feminist. Jeez I sould like I'm at an AA meeting... But that's what it's like. Even that little old lady on the bus today was confused at the idea of a guy being a Feminist, as are some of my friends who aren't in college. Feminism as a political movement searches for equal rights between men and women. What's wrong with that? That sounds like a pretty stupid thing to be arguing about doesn't it? There are caritable humanitarian organizations always going on and on saying such things as "all people are equal", "everyone should have the same rights to education, a roof over their head, clean drinking water". Feminism tries to do the same thing, so really it should be Humanitarianism. That's too long a word to spell tho, so Feminism will have to do.

Anyway, I'm rambling on like a nutty squirrel in a nut factory. I remember asking the old lady, her name was Kitty, if she remembered anything of the Suffragettes or what it was like when women weren't able to vote or vote at a later age. Before I got an answer tho she got off the bus. Maybe I was a bit weird... But I get like that sometimes.

So yeah, Feminism. It's great. I kind of have to keep saying that to myself because I'm using Feminism in my Final Year Project (FYP) for next year and I gotta stay positive about the whole thing. For my FYP I'm going to look at the representation of female characters in DC Comics. From Wonder Woman to Silk Spectre to Batgirl and every which way in between. It should be fun right? I like comic books. I'm not the biggest comic book nerd ever but I think I know enough about comics to get the FYP done. I used to work in a comic book shop so I can still get my hands on alot of comics to get the job done :)

Well I better rap this up as I should really be studying.... See ya :)

  1. Dear, I don't think she was flustered by your feminism. I think she was possibly insulted by you're implying that she had to be at least 100 years old or so, since Suffragettes were around at the turn of the 20th century, and women gained the vote around the 1920's or so. I'm old too, but not THAT old.

  2. Hello, in response to your post on my blog, I found you because you were linked on When Fangirls Attack (I presume that's how Sally got here too)- it's a linkblog for postings on comics and women. Well worth checking out if you are interested in that sort of thing.
Sally has a point about when women got the vote though..Having said that I just found a site that said there was a restriction of you had to be over 30 years of age and a landowner until 1928. To be fair if the lady was very old she may well have memories, or at least memories of her mother's experiences.

  3. Ok granted, it was a pretty stupid question, but it just popped out before I had a chance to stop it. She was in her 70's at the very least, possibly in her 80's but I thought it rude to ask. And women weren't given the same voting rights as men until 1945 in Ireland. They got the vote in 1928 I think, but it wasn't until 45 that both men and women could vote at the same age, so she could have said something about that if I didn't freak her out
