I've always been fascinated with this image since I was a kid. I don't know where I saw it the first time, possibly in the Simpsons or something. It wasn't until I was 16 and I saw the video of Tonight, Tonight by The Smashing Pumpkins that I found out where it came from.
It comes from a 1902 French movie called Le Voyage Dans La Lune, or The Trip to the Moon, by Georges Melies. I would love to own like a remastered version of it on dvd, but unfortunately all I have is the marvellous YouTube.
I found this picture on DeviantArt and decided to colour it in myself :)
I also found this great video of footage from the movie put to Tonight, Tonight. Pure brilliance.
