So for my Final Year Project I'm going to do feminism and female representation in comics. I got some mystery money during the week so I kinda went on a splurge yesterday. I got some great books about comics in the 30's and 40's which were really cool. My favourite image from it is this one
Captain Marvel teaming up with Uncle Sam to kick Hilter's ass. It seems like a funny idea now, but South Park have done worse to Saddam and Bin Laden, so having a super hero beating up Hilter and the Nazis sounds pretty tame. I would LOVE to get some of those comics from the 30's and 40's tho.

GHOST WORLD!!! That's what I wanted to talk about first of all. God I just keep getting distracted.. The best thing I got in my splurge is definately the Ghost World comic :) It's one of my favourite movies of all time, but I never read the comic. I bought it in O'Mahony's yesterday for a mere €10.60 and I love it already. The only bad thing is that Enid and Becky aren't super heroines so I can't use it in my FYP :( But I may try and sneak them in somehow :)
Ok I'm going completely off topic now but I'm listening to my friend's radio show online, http://www.radio.murdoch.edu.au/media/asx/thumm1_02_04_2009.asx
and it's so cool! He's in Australia and has a very, ahem, classical taste in music and it's mostly from the 80's. His first four song were 500 miles by The Proclaimers, On Call by Kings of Leon, Shining Light by Annie Lennox, and Time Warp from Rocky Horror Picture Show. I'd like to take credit for the Kings of Leon tho because that song was my ringtone while I was in Australia. Tom is a great guy and an entirely unique individual with a highly questionable sense of humour, and I am glad I can call him my friend.

Aw hell I'm getting all nostalgic for Australia again... I really loved listening to his radio show, and I nearly started crying through my laughter when I heard Time Warp. The night we watched Rocky Horror was great. I love that movie now. It was just so funny and odd. It's such a Tom movie :P
So please join me in saying... It's just a jump to the left, And a step to the right!

Rocky horror show is great.
ReplyDeleteAs an aside, and forgive me if you already knew about this, but if your doing a dissertation on feminism/women in comics, you should really check out the women in refridgerators list http://www.unheardtaunts.com/wir/
started by gail simone. make up your own mind about it I only mention it because I got the impression you didn't know about when fangirls attack (which could also be a good resource for you), and there is so much feminist comics activism online.
Sorry if i'm teaching you to suck eggs.
And post your dissertation up when you've finished it!
cool! thanks for the help. it's very much appreciated :)
